In the warm protected waters of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, two thirds of the North Pacific humpback whale population come to compete and mate. In this short film, Cousteau divers use rebreathers to quietly film a pod of humpback whales. Their intimate experience is featured in “America’s Underwater Treasures,” a two-hour program and part of the series, Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Adventures shown on PBS. Het Koninklijk Ballet Vlaanderen danst Doornroosje. Doornroosje, het sprookje uit de 17 de eeuw van Charles Perrault, is een goed voorbeeld van de uitzonderlijke complexiteit van het klassieke ballet op het einde van de 19de eeuw. Virtuoze academische dans wordt verenigd met een fijnzinnige karaktertekening. Het sprookje van Doornroosje werd door Marius Petipa uitgebeeld als één groot divertissement waarin hij laat zien dat hij vooral excelleerde in het bedenken van verrassende, meeslepende variaties op pointes. De productie van de Braziliaanse choreografe Marcia Haydée uit 1987 omvat alles wat men van een grote klassieker verwacht: spectaculaire dansscènes, prachtige decors en kostuums, getekend door de veelbesproken Chileense ontwerper Pablo Nuñez. Bovendien wordt de partituur van Pjotr Tsjaikowski live gebracht door het Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen.
