The Dance of the Hours segment from Disney’s 1940 film Fantasia. In this segment, four groups of dancers perform a ballet each representing a different time of day. (I just imagine someone in the designing process for this segment coming up with the idea “What four animals would look ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS doing ballet?”) In act two, evening falls and a troupe of Asian elephants appear and spend their time dancing around the sleeping hippo and blowing bubbles. Then a curiously strong gust of wind blows them all over the horizon. The still sleeping hippo (Who somehow seems to be heavier than all the elephants) floats back down to earth as night cloaks the world in shadow. After nightfall, the last troupe – comprised of male alligators – arrive on the scene and surround the sleeping hippo until their leader shows up and drives them all off. He then approaches the hippo who then awakens and, despite the difference in species, a romance blossoms between the two as they share their own special dance. In the finale, the lead gator brings his entire gang back on the scene and they all go after all of the hippos, elephants and ostriches from earlier. In the end, all the guys get girls of their own and they all dance together in a riotous performance that leaves the palace in shambles. As a special contest – or whatever you’d call it – I will give one free comment to anyone who can correctly name all of the principle dancers in this segment. (This event is now closed.)
